Sineu

Sineu (population 3000) is a small town in the centre of the island, and the village furthest from the sea. Tourists enjoy this little town, and throng to the famous cellar restaurants. In the cellar of San Torreo you can get good and cheap food.

The market of Sineu: On the whole, Sineu is a quiet town. This changes completely on Wednesdays, which is market day. Markets on Mallorca are popular among tourists and Sineu is by far the most famous of these. Each Wednesday thousands of people – mostly foreign – descend on Sineu in buses and rent cars. The big parking areas are jammed! Sineu sells the cheapest cloth and local groceries in Mallorca. The hundreds of stalls offer almost everything you could imagine. The animal market, which forms part of the main market, is by far the most popular part, though animal rights activists may disagree with it. You can buy goats, sheep, rabbits, chickens, cats, dogs, donkey horses.....

Many of the animals are held in small cages in the sun. Souvenir lovers will also like the market. Do be careful, however: many of the products are made in China and not in Mallorca, despite what the shrewd stall owner might tell you. You should visit the market before noon.

Connections to and from Sineu: Sineu is on the train route from Palma and Inca to Manacor. There are hourly trains in each direction. Buses run to the villages around Sineu. The buses and trains tend to be overcrowded on Wednesdays (market day).
