 An Internet Guide to the Spanish Island of Mallorca

Mallorca is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Europe. Every year more than 10 million people visit the island, the majority of them coming from Germany and Britain. Mallorca has around 300, 000 beds for the tourists, who are almost all exclusively package holidaymakers. Most of them visit for Mallorca’s mild climate, beaches, nightlife and highly developed tourist infrastructure. There are also millions of visitors who come to hike, to cycle, soak up the culture, enjoy nature and many other reasons.

Mallorca has around 1 million inhabitants, 40% of whom live in and around the island’s capital, Palma de Mallorca. The next biggest town after Palma de Mallorca has 30, 000 people. Of the island’s population, 100, 000 (10%) are German. Many people estimate the size of Mallorca as much smaller than it actually is: the island is 3600 square kilometres. It is only 150km from one side of the island to the other.

Mallorca is an island of contrasts. Consider the Bay of Palma with its Platja de Palma (Beach of Palma), an enduring symbol of mass tourism, and the most built-up tourist area in Europe, rolling out a non-stop, 365 days a year, 24 hour party. Sea, sun and sex are all lubricated with alcohol here. But move away from here, and you’ll find out just how big and diverse Mallorca is. In the north of the island you can visit the Tramuntana Mountains, a popular destination for hikers. The mountain villages are calm, almost tourist free and steeped with traditional culture. Going towards the East Coast there are quieter destinations for families such as Alcudia, Cala Millor, Cala Ratjada and Pollenca. In the island’s interior there are many interesting towns such as Manacor, and pockets of hippy and alternative tourist destinations. Most of these places can be found to the South East in and around Cala Figuera. The modern capital, Palma, is worth a visit – its Old Town is one of the finest in the whole of Spain.
